What is Numerology?

When it comes to interpreting the world around us, many of us are naturally inclined to seek out patterns and correlations. This is especially true of the things we see, hear and read. Some people, for example, notice numbers that repeat over and over again in their daily lives or in historical records and believe they are clues to a higher power or supernatural force. This is known as numerology.

Some say it’s based on the ancient Greek mathematician, Pythagoras, who linked mathematics with mysticism. Others say it’s a result of the fact that there are certain vibrations associated with each number. Regardless of its 2,500-year-old origins, numerology is a form of divination based on numbers that, practitioners claim, offer insight into an individual’s personality and life path.

The most popular method involves adding the total of all the letters in one’s full name at birth to find a single, defining digit called the life or destiny number. This is then interpreted according to the meanings of each number, including its relevance in a person’s life and the type of work they are best suited for.

There are free online calculators that can be used to build a numerology chart, though Siegel advises that it’s best to get a professional analysis in order to gain a better understanding of a person’s strengths, weaknesses and what lies ahead. She also says that practicing a little by watching videos of professional numerologists and crafting your own interpretations is an excellent way to learn the underlying logic behind these calculations.
