What is Numerology?

If you’re familiar with horoscopes, numerology takes that concept one step further. This ancient practice focuses on numbers like your life path number and personal name, believing they hold special significance. It also looks at patterns and repeating numbers that can help guide you in your life.

Numerology’s roots reach back to the Pythagorean philosopher and esoteric thinker, who believed that the universe was comprised of vibrations that could be understood through numbers. His teachings led to many different ways of looking at the world and numbers that were later used by Hebrews in a process called gematria and Greeks in a technique known as isopsephy. These systems were designed to correlate letters and words with numbers that would reveal hidden meanings.

The main numerology method that is most popular today is based on the teachings of Pythagoras and is commonly referred to as Pythagorean numerology. This method focuses on the numbers 1 through 9 and how they relate to each person.

In addition to analyzing each number, numerologists also look at the total of your birth date by adding together the digits that make up your month and day of birth. You then reduce this number until you get to a single digit, which is your life path number.

Another way of finding your numerology number is by calculating the letters in your full birth name and then assigning each letter a numerical value from one through nine. The total of these numbers is referred to as your personality or expression number and it’s sometimes compared with the final number of your life path or personal name.
