Imagine finding out that there was a secret code behind the numbers you see all around you, one that could explain why certain people come into your life and why you struggle with others. This is what numerology is about: the mystical study of interpreting vibrations and meanings in numbers.
This practice has been around for centuries. The modern form of it most often is attributed to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who believed that everything in the physical world vibrated with an energy that could be understood through numbers. Later systems incorporated letters and words into this equation, allowing names to be associated with specific powers or occurrences.
Today, numerology can be found in places like horoscopes and tarot cards, but it is far more detailed and nuanced than these tools, explains Bender. “Numerology is based on your full birth date and boiled down to a number that defines your personality traits, your soul urges, and even your karmic debt.”
For example, she says the Life Path number, which is derived by adding all the consonants in your full name, can show you the parts of your personality that are most visible to others, how you tend to communicate and interact with your friends and family members, and what kind of challenges you’ll face along your journey. And the Expression or Soul Urge number can tell you what you’re most passionate about and the kind of work you’ll do in this lifetime.
