The science of numbers and their mystical significance is called numerology. It is the belief that numbers have a vibrational significance and correspond to specific traits and aspects of your personality and life. It is a form of applied mysticism, similar to astrology and has been credited with helping people make decisions and foretell their future.
There are many different numerology systems. The most popular traces back to the teachings of the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras. He believed that everything in the physical world vibrated to a certain number and that the universe was aligned through non-physical forces best articulated through numbers. He developed a system that linked letters with their numerical values and mapped out the entire alphabet to numbers. Later, other cultures developed systems that connected the letters in names with their corresponding numbers as well.
Many numerology systems rely on adding up the total of the digits in a person’s date of birth to arrive at a number known as their Life Path or Destiny number. Alternatively, some use the sum of the letters in a person’s first name and last name, reducing them to single digits, to come up with their name or name number.
A person’s life-path or destiny number reveals what they are destined to do in this lifetime and who they are destined to be. Scolnick says these numbers can help us better understand our own personalities and those of others, and that those who have a common destiny number may be more compatible with one another. However, she warns that compatibility should never be taken to an extreme.
