Numerology – A Study of Numbers and Their Mystical Meanings

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Some people are drawn to numbers. Maybe they notice the repeated appearance of certain numbers in their lives, or a number relates to their birth date or name. Numerology, a study of numbers and their mystical meaning, has been around for more than 2,500 years. Proponents say it can help predict the future and give insight to relationships.

The earliest systems were founded by the Greek mathematician, Pythagoras, who believed that everything vibrated to its own unique frequency and could be interpreted through the numbers. Later, the Hebrews developed a system called gematria that translated letters of the alphabet into numerical values. It was used to analyze biblical texts and other religious writings.

Numerical patterns and synchronicity have been observed for thousands of years, and it seems that many people have a natural tendency to see repeating numbers as signs of special significance. In fact, some believe that recurring numbers are evidence of conspiracy and divine intervention.

The most common form of numerology today is based on the Pythagorean method of assigning a number to each letter of the alphabet and then reducing the sum to a single digit. Other numerology traditions include the Chaldean system of ancient Babylonian practices, and Kabbalistic studies of reoccurring digits in the Hebrew Bible. Most practitioners use the full name recorded on a birth certificate to calculate a life path number, but some use nicknames or the initials of names in addition to their actual given name.
